Don’t Drown Your Dreams

Don’t Drown Your Dreams

Why Commercial Diving is a Sinking Ship

Ever fantasize about becoming a commercial diver? Visions of Jacques Cousteau exploring vibrant coral reefs or uncovering lost treasures might dance in your head. But hold on to your anchor, because the reality of commercial diving is a far cry from those romanticized visions.

Here’s a wake-up call before you strap on that diving suit:

  • Ditching the Sunshine for Darkness: Forget exploring vibrant coral reefs. Most commercial dives happen in murky, zero-visibility environments. Imagine working on a rusty pipeline in pitch black, with only the faint glow of your helmet light, if you have one on it that is.
  • Trading Paradise for Peril: Sharks and sunken cities? Not a chance. Commercial divers face far more dangerous foes – decompression sickness, a potentially crippling condition caused by improper ascent. One wrong move, and you could be paralyzed for life.
  • Underwater Toil, Not Tropical Thrills: This job is far from glamorous. Think physically demanding labor – welding, cutting, and heavy lifting – all while tethered to a surface supply line, making every movement a struggle.
  • A Lonely Life on the High Seas or the Road!: Expect long stretches away from loved ones. Commercial divers often work on offshore rigs or remote locations, with limited contact with the outside world.
  • Job Market with a Leak: Don’t be fooled by the high salaries you might see advertised. The commercial diving industry is competitive, and jobs can be scarce depending on the economy and location.

There’s a Whole World Out There (Above Water)

Sure, the allure of adventure might be strong. But is it worth risking your health and well-being for a career that might not even be there? The time and money invested in training could be better spent on countless other careers that offer better pay, security, and a healthy work-life balance.

Think twice before you take the plunge. There’s a whole world out there, and for most of us it’s dry land.

But wait! Maybe the allure of the underwater world still calls to you. Perhaps you crave the thrill of exploration, even if it’s not on a pristine coral reef. If you have a thirst for adventure and a healthy dose of caution, then there might be another path for you.

Dive into the world of underwater exploration with my e-book, Under Dark Waters to find out what its REALLY about.
